Apps as gifts

Julie Zhuo's AI for no good reason reminded me of a little app I just made for my wife.

In all honesty, the app is essentially a glorified spreadsheet for tracking her work shifts (date, time, location, rate). But she can use it more easily than a spreadsheet on her phone, and she doesn't have to open up her laptop. When she wants, she can export the data as a spreadsheet.

A spreadsheet is fine... an Apple Note is fine... if you do this and bear with that and maybe close two eyes. But why settle for fine when a better alternative is so within reach nowadays?

I made the app in about an hour with Claude Code. Creating and maintaining this app just for us barely cost anything. Essentially a huge upside with no downside.

People have asked, "if AI is so good at coding, where are the killer apps made with AI?" Perhaps the killer apps are the little apps we make for one another—for no good reason.
